Approach

Clonlea Yoga Studio aims to apply the tools of yoga to the individual's specific circumstances - respecting their specific needs, lifestyle and current state of health. Initially a practice is developed that takes into account each student's starting point - it may be necessary to adapt certain postures to respect limitations that present themselves. As the student gains strength and confidence, the process moves from a practice adapted to limitations towards one that stretches abilities. Ultimately, yoga is an evolving process. Yoga starts from where we are, moving towards greater physical well-being and towards discovering a greater awareness.

The tools we use are:

Posture work

Both dynamic and static posture work is central to the practice. Posture work can help reduce physical tension, promote relaxation and improve flexibility and strength. It also helps one feel more refreshed and awake.

Breathing

Breathing in relationship to the postures is a primary emphasis. The precise use of the breath is a powerful tool to influence our physical, emotional and mental well-being. If one feels anxious, angry or lacking in focus, conscious breathing can help find the strength and calm of one's inner self. It also increases one's energy.

Sound

Sound in relationship to posture work is often brought into the practice. It can enhance the posture by helping you to stay engaged. It can be energising and create a sense of release in the body and mind. As the saying goes; sound can express what words cannot. Sound is a lovely way to connect with the group as a whole.

Seated breathing and chanting

Seated breathing and chanting can be applied to bring about a meditative and reflective quality to the practice. It allows the mind and body settle into stillness.

Mind

When starting Yoga, one can become aware of how distracted one is; how the dance of thoughts prevents clear thinking and the ability to remain focussed on one thing. Over time, the practice of yoga can help quieten the mind, think and focus clearly.

The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali can be regarded as the classical text on Yoga. It was compiled around 2000 years ago and is the back-bone to many approaches of yoga. It is primarily a book on the psychology of the mind. It talks of how one can move towards the attainment of a steady mind in a healthy body. There are study courses for those who are interested to explore and reflect on these teachings.
