Approach

The approach practiced at Clonlea Yoga Studio is referred to as the Viniyoga of Yoga.  The aim of Viniyoga is to apply the tools of yoga to the individual's specific circumstances - respecting their needs, lifestyle and current state of health. The tools we use are:-

Posture work  both dynamic and static, is central to the practice.

Posture work can help reduce physical tension, promote relaxation and improve flexibility and strength.  It also helps you to feel more refreshed and awake.

Breathing in the postures is emphasised.  Proper breathing strengthens and increases energy.  If you feel anxious, angry or unfocussed, conscious breathing can help you find your strong, calm, inner self.

Sound can be used with posture work. It can enhance the posture by helping you to stay engaged.   When used correctly, sound can be energising and create a form of release.

Seated breathing and chanting are included to bring a sense of quiet and stillness.  This allows for a meditative and reflective quality to the practice.

The Mind  When we start Yoga, we become aware of how distracted we are - how the dance of thoughts prevents us from thinking clearly.   We notice how difficult it can be to stay focussed on one thing. Over time, the practice of yoga can help us to quieten the mind, think and focus more clearly.

Key points:-

  • At first the practice takes into account each student's starting point -  it may be necessary to adapt the postures in order to respect any limitations which present themselves.

  • The precise use of the breath is a powerful tool to influence our physical and mental well-being.

  • The process moves from a practice adapted to our limitations towards one that stretches our abilities.

  • Ultimately, yoga is an evolving process.Yoga starts from where we are, moving towards greater physical well-being to discovering a greater awareness.

The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali can be regarded as the classical text on Yoga.  It was compiled around 2000 years ago and is the back-bone to this approach to yoga.  It is primarily a book on the psychology of the mind.  It talks of how we can move towards the attainment of a steady mind in a healthy body.  There are study courses for those who are interested to explore and reflect on these teachings.
